A new bowling alley with a retro feel has opened in Hyde Park with delicious milkshakes and fried chicken sandwiches from the local pit master. Seven Ten Social, the latest project from former Southport Lanes owner Steve Soble, aims to be a neighborhood hotspot that retains a charming old-school feel while weaving in modern technology such as automated scoring and ordering kiosks instead of servers. The new business replaces Seven Ten Lanes, another Soble-owned bowling alley that closed last year at 1055 E. 55th Street.
The Seventy name has a history with Soble who used the moniker for his now-defunct Lincoln Park bowling alley that stood next to his brewery. Still, Soble says South Side Lanes is a fresh start and an opportunity to keep bowling culture alive despite the pandemic's impact and the allure of high-tech gaming. "We've embraced this moment and see it as the evolution of a neighborhood bowling alley, bar and grill," he said. "If we don't change and if we don't think ahead about how we do this business, we might be a dinosaur."

In an effort to balance nostalgia with the high expectations of modern diners, Soble has once again teamed up with Lily Q's Charlie McKenna to create a tight menu of fun and family-friendly options. McKenna has worked with Soble as they moved Lilly's Cue from its original location in Bucktown to the District Brew Yards in West Town. Lilly's Q is nationally known for its barbecue sauces available nationwide.
On the South Side, McKenna has cooked up Wagyu beef burgers (American cheese, pickles, onions, burger sauce) and fried chicken sandwiches (dry, Buffalo or Nashville hot) with chicken wings, tenders and crinkle chips.
Consumers of all ages can up their game with traditional milkshakes (vanilla, chocolate or strawberry) and adults can upgrade to delicious versions like frozen chocolate sludge (chocolate shake, vodka, Baileys, Kahlua) or cream ice colada (vanilla). shake, Malibu rum, pineapple juice). Like all corners of the hospitality industry, Saith Dag has faced staffing challenges. This has led operators to turn to self-service kiosks where customers order food and drinks as opposed to human interaction. The move means fewer employees but higher pay, Soble explains. It's also designed to help reduce contentious interactions between workers and patrons, such as fights over masks and vaccination cards seen across the country. "We organize the party but we don't serve the people like before," he said.
Designed to create a playful and relaxed atmosphere at the heart of old school bowling culture, Seven Ten Social seats 40 diners between booths, tables and a 12-seat bar. Corrugated metal and white subway tiles create a blank slate that's offset by pops of color provided by a large green neon sign that reads "Hyde Park," marquee lights encouraging visitors to "At Drink Bowl," and row after row of rainbow-colored bowling balls.
In a major overhaul of previous 1960s-era equipment, Seven Ten Social's eight bowling lanes feature automatic scoring. "Once we bit the bullet, it was a completely different experience," Soble said. "Now we have the vintage look with new technology and it's seamless operation - no pins jamming, balls no sticking."
Independent bowling alleys across the US were already in a precarious position before COVID-19 hit, but indoor dining bans and takeout and delivery pivots have further disrupted the specialty industry. That struggle paid off in September 2020 when Sauble closed Southport Lane's historic bar, bowling alley and billiards hall permanently after nearly a century due to financial constraints due to the pandemic. "Southport Lanes is really about community coming together, and when you take away these community spaces and you can't do that safely, it's very difficult to make it work," he told Eater at the time.
