The New London Public Library is a historic library located at 63 Huntington Street at the corner of New London and Connecticut. The library was donated to the city by Hippie Lumhao.

And it was designed by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge in the Richardsonian Romanesque style; George Warr Cole is the project manager.

London Gets New Public Library Branch

The whale trader Hry P. Hav died in 1876 and his money was to be divided among his three sons.

However, his son Thomas died, so Thomas' share was placed in a trust fund to be used for "charitable and charitable purposes".

The trustee of the Hav Legacy secured a charter in 1882 for the public library and hired Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge of Boston to design it.

Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge were successors to architects Hry Hobson Richardson and worked from Richardson's initial design to preserve the popular Richardsonian architecture found in other libraries.

St George Warr Cole is the project manager. Cole also served as a trustee of the Williams Memorial Institute and the Nathan Hale School.

The 1970 National Register of Historic Places says the building has not been replaced with the "possible elevator exemption," which appears to date from the 9th century, but "does not appear on the plan."

However, the library added a 15,000-square-foot expansion in 1974. Further trips increased administrative office space and collections, concluding in March 2001. The children's area and meeting room also reopened in 2006. We were in New London, CT the weekend before Winter Storm Nemo hit and conditions were warmer and definitely drier. As you can see from the photo below, the New London Public Library is a surprise. Although my visit was short-lived due to a plane crash, I was lucky enough to be given a private tour by librarian Ellen Paul, the lead director who spotted me taking pictures. As we walked through the building, she told me the history of the library, from its creation to the recent renovations.

The plaque is on the corner of the State Building and reads: 'New London Public Library . . A gift to his city from Henry Philemon Haven, one of London's wealthiest whaling merchants. Construction was completed and the building opened to the public in 1892. Renowned architect Henry Hobson Richardson is recognized for his style of construction, although the actual construction was supervised by his successors, Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge of Boston.(Further construction at south began in 1975 and is made possible by city donated funds, state funds, and public subscriptions.)

The details make the building: beautiful eaves, stone carvings, contrasting colors and red paint all add to the building's attractiveness and historic significance.

They're not lying, this lot is inspected. As you walk into the back entrance, there is a sign up sheet to list your car, model and registration number. The library is located in the heart of the historic and bustling city of New London, and I guess they need to secure the parking lot for sponsors on the weekends and tourist season.

This open staircase greets you as you walk through the back door. The light flowing landing is where you enter the library through the front door.

The phone is by the front door, along with used books for sale at the library. I can't remember the last library I saw that still had payphones for their sponsors, but only every library used books for sale.

I'm not a fan of 1970's architecture (anyone?), but I was excited to go into the adult section and see these two story architectures that enhanced the design of the early library. This is the best 70's addition I've ever seen!

The images from the top floor of the two stacks look at the information/reference table. The light that filters through the windows that line the back of the new extensions and the plants gives the room a pleasant warmth.

Behind these two computers are two rows of sponsor computer terminals…all in use. It was a busy Saturday morning.

Now imagine that you are in front of the cashier again. The children's section is to your left and at the beginning of the library.

More beautiful oak veneers in next room. That window faces Huntington Street at the entrance.
